Selling clean energy

Until April 2010 and the introduction of the Clean Energy Cash Back Scheme in generating your own renewable electricity you are producing 2 separate commodities which you are then able to sell to an electricity supplier, (1) electricity for export and (2) Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs).

Electricity for export

This is excess electricity which your system has generated but which hasn’t been used within the building, for example, if you’re generally out during the day, in mid-summer or when you’re away on holiday.

This is automatically exported to the national grid, where it is used in the normal manner. In order to be paid for this electricity some suppliers will require an export meter to be fitted, some will estimate your export based on the size of your system or on your total generation and your electricity usage. If an export meter is required some suppliers will fit this free of charge, some will add a standing charge to your bill, and some will charge up to £250 + VAT. It is therefore important to find this out as in the short term it could make selling your excess electricity uneconomic.

Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC)

This is based on the total generation of your system, whether you use it or not, and is based on the reading from the Ofgem approved total generation meter which we supply as part of your system.

Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) are awarded to accredited generators of eligible renewable electricity produced within the UK. Once registered with Ofgem you will earn 1 ROC for every 1MWh (or 1,000kWh) of renewable electricity you generate. This is due to increase to 2 ROCs per MWh from April 2009. Some suppliers who buy ROCs will help you with ROC registration, others will act as your agent, but only if you sell to them.

Under the Renewable Obligation Order 2002 electricity suppliers are obliged to source an ever increasing percentage of electricity every year from renewable sources. Suppliers have to meet this obligation by presenting enough Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs). They can either earn these themselves by generating their own renewable electricity, or they can buy ROCs from other generators. If suppliers do not have enough ROCs at the end of the year to meet their obligation they must pay an equivalent amount into a fund as a ‘fine’.

Some electricity suppliers are now buying ROCS along with your exported electricity. Alternatively you can sell ROCs on an online auction site, but due to the high annual fee this is only viable if you have a relatively large PV system or wind turbine.

Companies who buy & sell green electricity:

As with the supply of electricity the deals available change regularly, so it’s worth checking various suppliers to find out what’s on offer. In order to sell your exported electricity and ROCs you will need to be signed up with that company for your supply.

It’s best to start by asking your current supplier what they will offer you. Then perhaps try another couple of suppliers for comparison.  If you’re not already with a green supplier or on a green tariff now might be a good time to switch.

The suppliers listed below offer various combinations of buying exported electricity, buying ROCs and different metering requirements. We can’t recommend a particular supplier as different schemes will suit different people, but the links below offer a good place to start your research. Good Luck!
