Feed in tariffThe Department of Energy and Climate Change’s feed in tariff or FIT is also known as ‘Clean Energy Cashback’ The scheme will pay for every kWh generated by a photovoltaic system – even if it is used within the property! DECC have recently proposed to revise FIT payments. For example, retrofitted systems under 4kWp and installed before 1 April 2012 will receive a guaranteed 25 year FIT payment of 43.3p per kWh until 1st April 2012 and 21p per kWh thereafter. For domestic customers this is tax free. Additionally, where the electricity is used within the property importing electricity from the grid is avoided (Saves approx. further 15p/kWh) or if the solar electricity is exported then there will be a guaranteed legal minimum payment of 3p/kWh.
For a typical 3.36kWp domestic PV system this equates to an annual cashback payment of around £480 - excluding savings from avoided import and payments for any exported power. DECC’s intention is to incentivise photovoltaic systems with a return on investment around 4%.
